Walk up at the Pic du Jer

Overlooking the town of Lourdes, the Pic du Jer is a must-do hike in the Hautes-Pyrénées. This summit offers a spectacular 360° panoramic view of the Pyrenees. From the cross at the summit, the view stretches across the Pibeste,the Pyrenean mountain ranges, the famousPic du Midi de Bigorreand even as far as the Gavarnie Valleys.

Ideal for a break in Lourdes, this hike combines the pleasure of walking with the chance to explore the scenery. The well-signposted forest path winds its way through vegetation typical of the Pyrenees: shady undergrowth, sun-drenched clearings and birdsong accompany the climb.

The atmosphere changes as the hours pass: soft morning light on the ridges, the golden warmth of the sunset over the valleys, and a light mist that sometimes envelops the hills. Every step reveals a new viewpoint, heightening the thrill of reaching a panoramic summit without any major technical difficulty.

An easy walk

Reaching an altitude of 948 metres, the hike to the summit of the Pic du Jer involves an ascent of around 500 metres.

Once you reach the upper level of the funicular station, several well-maintained paths invite you to explore, with gentle changes in elevation around the summit plateau. The paths wind their way through high-altitude meadows and shady woodland, offering varied views and spots perfect for contemplation. The atmosphere is peaceful, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, making it ideal for a group outing that combines exploration and relaxation.

Please note that it is possible to take the funicular up, so walkers of all abilities can enjoy the panoramic views.

Tips for making the most of it

Choose comfortable shoes with good grip. Take water, sun cream, a windbreaker and a hat with you: in the mountains, the weather can change quickly.

The morning or late afternoon bring particularly soft light to the peaks of the Pyrenees, perfect for photography.

Finally,take your time: the Pic du Jer experience isn’t measured in kilometres travelled, but in the emotions you feel.
