Explore the Pibeste Nature Reserve

Every hike is an invitation to explore a wild mountain range where woodland, high-altitude summer pastures, cliffs and sweeping panoramic views of the Pyrenees alternate.

As you follow the trails, the reserve reveals remarkable biodiversity and landscapes that change with the seasons. To help you choose your route, the guidebook ‘From Woodlands to Summer Pastures and Other Hidden Gems of the Reserve’, available from the Tourist Office, features 13 signposted trails to suit every taste for a getaway.

Just a few minutes from Lourdes, the Batsurguère Valley reveals a more secluded side of the Pyrenees. Between the villages of Omex, Ossen, Ségus and Viger, the landscape alternates between meadows, forests and ancient paths steeped in history. Once characterised by slate mining, this peaceful valley is now a favourite hiking destination for those seeking tranquillity, authenticity and magnificent views of Lourdes and the surrounding mountains.

Keen walkers can even reach Ségus directly from Lourdes via the GR®101, a lovely way to gradually transition from the town to the great outdoors.

As you explore the reserve, do remember to bring your binoculars so you can try your hand at wildlife spotting. The reserve’s diverse landscape, resulting from its geographical location (forests, meadows, cliffs), makes it a rich habitat for wildlife. Depending on which side of the mountain range you’re on, the natural habitats vary, and so does the wildlife.
Move quietly and keep a watchful eye out, and you may spot birds of prey soaring in the sky or near the cliffs. Indeed, the reserve is a sanctuary for diurnal birds of prey, home to no fewer than 19 species: Egyptian vulture,griffon vulture,bearded vulture. Let’s not forget the mammals that inhabit this vast area, with 27 species recorded, 11 of which are protected at national level. So, with a bit of luck, discretion and patience, you might just spot a chamois, a Corsican mouflon(introduced in 1978) or a fox.
