The fortified castle: understanding the history of Lourdes

Perched on its rocky outcrop, it has overlooked the town for over a thousand years and bears witness to its past as a stronghold at the gateway to the Pyrenees. A fortress at the heart on the history of Lourdes

It is impossible to imagine Lourdes without its castle. Long before the apparitions of 1858, the town developed around this fortress, built on a rocky promontory in a strategic location from which the entrance to the Pyrenean valleys could be monitored.

Over the centuries, the castle has served various purposes, witnessed major periods of history and become one of the best-preserved monuments in the region. Every gate you pass through and every courtyard you cross bears witness to this long history that has shaped Lourdes.
