The water of Lourdes

The water of Lourdes

Around the fountains, the gestures are similar without ever being quite the same. People fill a bottle, hold out a flask, or let the water run into the palm of their hand. For over 160 years, this spring, discovered by Bernadette, has been a feature of visits to the Sanctuary and remains freely accessible to all.

A source a range of experiences to enjoy

Discover the water of Lourdes

There are several ways to experience the water of Lourdes. The fountains, which are freely accessible, allow visitors to drink directly from the spring or fill a bottle. The act of drawing water invites visitors to experience a moment of spiritual reflection centred on water.
Finally, the pools offer an opportunity for immersion in a specific setting, in accordance with the guidelines set by the Sanctuary.

The Fountains of the Sanctuary

Just a few steps from the Grotto of Massabielle, the fountains allow everyone to experience the water of Lourdes with ease. Drink straight from the spring, fill a bottle or a flask to take away… these simple acts, available free of charge all year round, are part of the experience of visiting the Sanctuary. Fed directly by the spring discovered by Bernadette Soubirous in 1858, the fountains welcome visitors from all over the world every day, whether they are pilgrims or simply curious visitors.

The pools offer visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the spring water in an atmosphere of calm and contemplation. Accompanied by the Sanctuary’s hosts, this experience is open to anyone wishing to explore its spiritual dimension.

Individual visitors may access the pools in the morning, subject to availability. As opening arrangements are subject to change, it is advisable to check before your visit.

The Gesture of Water

The ‘Gesture of Water’ offers an opportunity to experience a time of prayer and contemplation centred on the water of Lourdes.
Welcomed by volunteers, participants are invited to relive the words spoken to Bernadette: “Go and drink from the spring and wash yourselves there”, through a guided journey comprising a time of prayer, the act of drinking the water from the spring and washing one’s face and hands. Open to all, this moment is offered with respect for each person’s individual approach.

TESTIMONIAL

Every day, hundreds of bottles are filled at the fountains of the Sanctuary. Behind this seemingly simple act often lies a special intention: to take home a memento, to bring joy to a loved one, or to maintain a connection with Lourdes. I find it moving to think that a little piece of our destination finds its way into homes all over the world, far beyond the Pyrenees.
