The swimming pools at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes

The Baths at the Sanctuary of Lourdes have their origins in the words spoken to Bernadette Soubirous during the ninth Apparition, on 25 February 1858: ‘Go and drink from the spring and wash yourself there. ’ This act, first performed near the Massabielle spring, continues to be practised today by men and women from all corners of the world. For many, it is one of the highlights of a visit to Lourdes, whatever the reason that brought them to the Sanctuary.

The Baths hold a special place on the visitor’s itinerary. They are neither a place of medical treatment nor a bathing area in the usual sense of the term. They welcome those who wish to immerse themselves in the spring water, in an environment where calm, respect and support are at the heart of the experience.

At the entrance, glances meet without a word. On leaving, each face tells a different story. The Pools do not promise the same experience for everyone; they simply offer a place where everyone is free to experience this moment in their own way.

At the Baths of the Sanctuary of Lourdes, nothing is done in a hurry. Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed and guided by the hospitality staff, who are on hand to explain the process and answer any questions. Each person proceeds at their own pace, in an atmosphere of trust, discretion and respect.

The immersion takes place in separate areas for women and men. It involves being immersed in the spring water, in accordance with the Sanctuary’s guidelines. For many, this moment is preceded or followed by a period of silence or prayer. Each person is welcomed with the same care and is free to experience this moment in their own way.

Support is an essential part of this experience. Behind every welcome, every word and every gesture, volunteers from all over the world devote their time to those who pass through the gates of the Pools. Their presence helps to make this a place where everyone can experience this moment with simplicity, whatever their beliefs or background.

The Lourdes Sanctuary Baths welcome visitors who wish to undertake this pilgrimage in accordance with the conditions set by the Sanctuary. To ensure the quality of the support provided, access is organised into specific time slots.

Individual visitors are welcomed in the mornings during specific time slots. Afternoons are reserved for pilgrimage groups. As opening times may change during the year, it is therefore advisable to check them before your visit.

The Pools are situated just a short walk from the Grotto of Massabielle and the fountains. Visiting them forms a natural part of the tour of the Sanctuary, as you pass through the various sites that tell the Sanctuary’s story.
