How long should you allow for the climb up to Le Béout?

The duration depends on the route you choose and your starting point. If you take the GR101, allow about 1 hour 30 minutes’ walk to reach the summit.

How difficult is the Béout walk?

The Béout remains a hike through unspoilt countryside with significant elevation changes. Sturdy footwear is recommended, along with a supply of water and clothing suitable for the weather. The difficulty level should be assessed based on the route taken and each person’s walking experience.

When is the best time to go hiking at Le Béout?

What views can you see from Le Béout?

The climb offers several views of Lourdes and the foothills of the Pyrenees. From the heights, the view extends in particular to the Pic du Jer, the Pibeste massif and the Pic du Midi de Bigorre when visibility is good.

The Béout Massif

There’s no need to take the car to find the first trails. From Lourdes, the Béout walk gradually leads you up into the hills and landscapes of the Pyrenean foothills. As you walk on, the houses fade from view, the vegetation becomes more abundant and the view stretches further into the distance. The summit, at an altitude of 791 metres, is still very close to the town: a great opportunity to fit in a few hours of walking and nature during your stay.

Seeing the bigger picture, quite simply

Le Béout offers, above all, some beautiful changes of perspective. As you climb, the Pic du Jer, the Pibeste massif and, further on, the Pic du Midi de Bigorre come into view. From the heights, Lourdes, in turn, reveals itself from an unusual angle. You can make out the town, its location at the foot of the mountains and the surrounding landscape. The walk then becomes as much a hike as a way of gaining a better understanding of the local geography.

Rediscover the tranquillity of the hills

Just a few kilometres separate the streets of Lourdes from this mid-mountain atmosphere. The pace naturally slows as you follow the path: walking, taking in the scenery, stopping for a few minutes to gaze at the Pyrenees, or sharing a picnic. Le Béout offers that rather rare opportunity to easily spend a few hours outdoors without having to organise a full-day trip. A place in ancient history

The Béout hides traces of activity dating back several centuries. The massif was used as a quarry for the manufacture of sarcophagi during the Merovingian period. Traces of quarrying are still visible along the route. Another chapter in the history of the Béout thus unfolds beneath the hikers’ feet, blending heritage and landscapes.
