Hiking

the Soum of Caubi

Just a few minutes from Lourdes, this natural viewpoint offers a spectacular view of the Pyrenees. From the Pibeste massif to the Hautacam ridges, the landscapes stretch as far as the eye can see, offering a truly refreshing break. Combining contemplation, beautiful light and wide-open spaces, this half-day getaway promises a rejuvenating break.

An easy walk Less than 10 minutes from Lourdes

The mountains aren’t just for keen sports enthusiasts in search of dizzying climbs! It’s perfectly possible to enjoy the delights of the Pyrenees and find peace and quiet whilst taking in the beauty of nature, without having to travel too far or work up too much of a sweat.

Just a 10-minute drive from Lourdes, the Soum de Caubi walk is a real gem for a half-day getaway: a 9km loop with an elevation gain of 420 d+.

The walk starts from the little village of Ayné, just 6 km from Lourdes. Right from the start, you’ll walk alongside a stream, pass through a small hamlet, and come across old mills and beautiful traditional houses. You’ll feel like you’re in a different world straight away – much to our delight! The path, marked in yellow, follows a steady climb. The route is suitable for walkers of all abilities, including children who are used to walking.

As you reach the ridge, the walk really comes into its own with its panoramic views. Three small peaks (‘soum’ in the Bigourdan dialect) await you, just a few minutes’ walk from one another:Soum de Caubi, thenSoum de Basta, and finally, Soum de Tucoulet. Each offers a beautiful view of the high peaks of the Hautes-Pyrénées: Pic du Midi de Bigorre, Balaïtous, Gabizos, and many other wonders besides. With a bit of luck, you may also come across horses roaming freely. They are not particularly shy, but please remember to keep your distance, walk calmly around them and avoid touching them to respect their peace and quiet.

The loop ends by heading back north from the Soum de Basta. As you walk gently along the ridge (with no exposed sections), you’ll come across the yellow markings again, which will guide you safely back to Ayné. In the background, admire the magnificent silhouette ofthe Pic du Jer, the iconic landmark of Lourdes.

Tips for a successful hike

There are no water sources or shade on the ridges: make sure you take plenty of water, a cap and sun cream.

A four-season walk: The Soum de Caubi is accessible all year round. In summer, it’s best to set off early in the morning or in the evening (a great spot for sunsets, and safe to make your way back down in the twilight!).  In October, do not go to the ‘soums’, as this is a hunting area: pigeon traps (check with the town hall).

This is a pastoral area; please respect the natural environment: do not approach the animals, do not touch them (even if they approach you), keep your dogs on a lead, and do not leave any rubbish behind.

Why go for a walk at Soum de Caubi
