Lake Isaby: an easy family walk

Lake Isaby is a legendary lake in the Gaves Valley, 50 minutes from Lourdes. On a cool day, a walk around the lake will delight everyone, young and old alike, and the view is sure to impress you.

An easy walk in the Gaves Valley

Lake Isaby can be reached from Hautacam, above Argelès-Gazost. It takes 30 to 45 minutes to reach Lake Isaby, where you’ll discover the sun-drenched slopes of the surrounding peaks.

You can choose to go hiking on your own, following the signposts for the Lake Isaby route, or you can hire a qualified guide to help you discover and observe the Pyrenean flora and fauna, as well as the stories and legends of this iconic spot.

This easy walk allows everyone to explore the mountain from a new perspective and reach the lake with a great sense of achievement.

Dogs on a lead are permitted on the site throughout the route. Along the way, children will love picking blueberries.

Lake Isaby is also the ideal place for families to try their hand at fishing in a mountain lake. Accompanied by a fishing guide, discover all the finer points of trout fishing. These memories will stay with you and your family forever.

Would you like to round off this walk by exploring other lakes? Lakes Ourrec and Bassias are accessible from the path overlooking Lake Isaby.

Tips for a successful hike

There are no water sources or shade along the path to Lake Isaby: make sure you bring plenty of water, a cap and sun cream.

This walk is accessible from spring onwards: Lake Isaby is accessible relatively early in the year due to its altitude (1,558 m). In summer, set off early in the morning or in the evening to enjoy the cooler temperatures.

This is a pastoral area, so please respect the natural environment: do not approach the animals or touch them (even if they approach you), keep your dogs on a lead, and do not leave any rubbish behind.

Why go for a walk at Lake Isaby

Fancy a hike that isn’t too challenging, just on the outskirts of Lourdes? This spot is ideal for a family outing. On your way back, have a good look around – there’s a good chance you’ll spot some blueberries…
