The mountain passes of the Pyrenees

Climbing a Pyrenean pass is to step into the legend of cycling. Starting from Lourdes, the greatest climbs in the Pyrenees await both amateur and experienced cyclists alike. With legendary hairpin bends, spectacular scenery and roads made famous by the Tour de France, every climb becomes an experience where the effort is richly rewarded by the beauty of the panoramic views.

The Tourmalet pass

Needless to say, with a giant like the Tourmalet in our valleys, right next to the majestic Aubisque, hearts and passions run high here all year round. Lourdes is the ideal base from which to explore the mountain passes and lies on the 100 km Tourmalet loop, halfway between the two sides of this legendary pass.
At an altitude of 2,115 metres, the Col du Tourmalet is the highest road pass in the Pyrenees. The climb, via the Luz-Saint-Sauveur and Barèges side, is 19 km long and has an average gradient of between 6 and 8 per cent, with gradients of 10 per cent towards the summit. The high-mountain scenery throughout the climb and its exceptional history make the Col du Tourmalet a legendary destination for any competitive cyclist.

Collars in the Val d'Azun

The Val d’Azun is a must-visit destination for mountain cycling enthusiasts. From the legendary climbs of the Col du Soulor and the Col d’Aubisque, made famous by the Tour de France, to the lesser-known passes of Les Borderes and Les Spandelles, each route reveals a different side to the Pyrenees. Peaceful roads, spectacular views and charming villages make this valley an ideal place to enjoy the full cycling experience, just a short ride from Lourdes.

Climbs Not to be missed

From Lourdes, it’s quick and easy to reach the major climbs of the Pyrenees. The Gaves Valley Greenway or the back roads allow you to leave the town at a leisurely pace before heading towards Hautacam, Luz Ardiden or Le Cambasque. After a few kilometres to warm up, the road gradually climbs, giving way to ascents renowned for their character and scenery. Three unmissable climbs to discover the full diversity of the Pyrenees by bike, with Lourdes as your starting point.
