Family bike ride

 along the Greenway

The Gaves Greenway with children

The Gaves Greenway offers families a simple way to experience the Pyrenees in a different light. Starting from Lourdes, everyone can set off at their own pace along a safe route that encourages you to cycle, but also to take the time to look around, play and enjoy nature. Here, the ride becomes an experience to share, combining moments of togetherness, peaceful scenery and discoveries all along the way.

Why you’re going to love it!

Cycling as a family facing the mountains

The Gaves Greenway is the ideal starting point for a family bike ride with the children. Safe and easily accessible, this route allows you to cycle in complete peace of mind whilst visiting several must-see sites in Lourdes and the Pyrenees. In just a few pedal strokes, the ride turns into a real adventure, combining heritage, nature and panoramic views.

From the greenway, three excursion ideas await families within 300 metres of the route: the Fortified Castle of Lourdes, the Pyrenees Wildlife Park and the Pic du Jer. Plenty to alternate between cycling, exploring and spending quality time together throughout the day.

Those who are particularly curious can also extend the experience by taking the No. 12 mountain bike discovery trail (easy). This route, which runs along the banks of the Gave, offers a gentle introduction to mountain biking in a natural setting suitable for young cyclists.

A bit of background of the Gaves Greenway

At the end of the 19th century, a railway line served the spa towns of Luz-Saint-Sauveur and Cauterets.
The mountain railway, which was a major asset for the economic development of the Gaves Valleys, was phased out in favour of road transport.
Now restored, this former railway line offers an easy and peaceful route. This route, set entirely in natural surroundings and ideal for families and keen walkers alike, allows you to explore 12 villages in the Argelès-Gazost valley at your own pace, with stunning views of the Gave de Pau and the Hautacam and Pibeste mountain ranges.
