Sacré-Cœur Church

The sanctuary and a new parish church were built on the initiative of Father Peyramale. The original plan had been to extend the former medieval St Peter’s Church, but it had been weakened by a fire in 1896 and was eventually demolished. Construction of the new Church of the Sacred Heart began in 1875 and, due to financial difficulties, was not completed until 1936. Several historic items are preserved in this church: the baptismal fonts used when Bernadette was baptised, a statue and Father Peyramale’s confessional. And, something rarely seen in France, the priest lies in the crypt of his own church.

Thanks to the support of Abbot Peyramale, the sanctuary and a new church were built.
