Couv, Chemin Bernadette 2025
In early 1857, the Soubirous family fell into poverty and were forced to move into a dark and unsanitary room, nicknamed the ‘dungeon’, a former prison that had been disused since 1824. In September 1857, Bernadette was sent to Bartrès for five months to stay with her former wet nurse, Marie Laguës, to help with household chores and daily tasks. In January 1858, she returned to Lourdes to attend the school for the poor run by the Sisters of Charity of Nevers. On 11 February 1858, whilst gathering dead wood on the banks of the Gave near the Massabielle Grotto, she had an encounter that would change the course of her life: this is known as the Marian Apparitions of Lourdes.
