Sanctuary of Our Lady of Garaison
Our Lady of Garaison is a 16th-century Marian sanctuary which was popular with visitors until the French Revolution.
Around 1515, the Virgin Mary appeared on 3 occasions to Angèle de Sagazan, a young shepherdess. “Here, my gifts will pour forth”, “I want a chapel to be built”, and “Do not forget to thank God for his kindness” were the messages spoken by the Virgin.
In 1540 a chapel was built at the precise spot where the apparitions took place. Thanks to the involvement of the local clergy at the time, Our Lady of Garaison became a major pilgrimage site until the French Revolution.
After the Revolution, the main purpose of this site became education and teaching. Today the Our Lady of Garaison school has 600 pupils.
