Lourdes 2019 : Bernadette year

In 1858, the Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous, a young girl from Lourdes aged just 14. Since then, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes has become one of the major spiritual locations in the world, welcoming millions of visitors and pilgrims from every corner of the globe every year.

2018 marked the commemoration of the 160th anniversary of the Apparitions, and the City of Lourdes, in close collaboration with the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, is celebrating the 175th anniversary of the birth of Bernadette (and the 140th anniversary of her death) in 2019.

The programme of festive and cultural events that were successfully staged in 2018 is set to continue in 2019.  Certain key dates in Bernadette's life, such as her birthdate on 7 January and her death on 16 April, will be celebrated as special occasions. The opening of the Year of Bernadette was heralded on 6 January.
Plans have already been made to resume and refine the light show that was projected onto the castle’s walls every evening during the summer season. New conferences will be scheduled. A series of readings of the works of Bernadette and the works of key authors written about her over the centuries is also planned. And, as in 2018, the City of Lourdes’ main festivals, including the Festival of Sacred Music from 13 to 22 April 2019, will follow the theme of this event.

The high point of 2019 will be the creation of the musical Bernadette of Lourdes. Composed by the singer Gregoire and presented by the producers of the musical Robin des Bois, this thrilling and moving show will tell the extraordinary story of the young Bernadette Soubirous.
