Lourdes 2019 : Bernadette year
In 1858, the Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous, a young girl from Lourdes who was just 14 years old. Since then, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes has become one of the most important centres of spirituality in the world, welcoming millions of visitors and pilgrims from all over the world every year.
Following a year in 2018 that marked the commemoration of the 160th anniversary of the Apparitions, the City of Lourdes, in close collaboration with the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, has decided to celebrate, in 2019, the 175th anniversary of the birth of Bernadette and the 140th anniversary of her death.
This special year will continue the momentum of festive and cultural events successfully presented in 2018. Certain key dates in Bernadette's life, such as 7 January, the date of her birth, and 16 April, that of her death, will be particularly highlighted. The opening of this Bernadette Year took place on 6 January.
Plans have already been made to resume and develop the light show that was projected on the castle every evening during the summer season. New conferences will be scheduled. A series of readings of Bernadette’s words and those of key authors who have written about her over the centuries is also planned. And, as in 2018, the City of Lourdes’ main festivals, including the Festival of Sacred Music from 13 to 22 April 2019, will be in keeping with this event.
The climax of 2019 will be the creation of the musical Bernadette of Lourdes. Composed by the singer Gregoire and presented by the producers of Robin des Bois (Robin Hood), this moving and unifying show will tell the story of the young Bernadette Soubirous’s extraordinary adventure.
