The last place of worship built within the enclosure of the Sanctuaries (opened in 1988), the Church of Saint Bernadette stands opposite the Grotto of Massabielle on the right bank of the Gave de Pau. This modern church, fitted with removable screens, was built on the spot where Bernadette Soubirous was standing when she saw her first apparition on 16 July 1858.
